Purpose: To investigate whether the blue light meters in the market are suitable for evaluating the blue light blocking performance of lenses.
Methods: The blue light blocking performance of the blue light meters was evaluated by quantifying the spectral distribution of the light sources of the blue light meters, blue light blocking rate of the lenses, and the spectral transmittance of the lenses.
Results: The light sources used in the blue light meters emitted visible light with a narrow line width centered at 400 nm. Owing to these characteristics, the measured values of the blue light blocking rate measured with the blue light meters greatly deviated from the values measured by the international standard ISO 12312-1:2013.
Conclusions: It was confirmed that the light sources used in blue light meters in the market were insufficient to evaluate the blue light blocking performance. It is necessary to develop light sources required for a blue light meter that can be demonstrated to the consumers in optical shops without significantly departing from the results measured by the international standard and research on the blue light measurement method.
